Our History

Afognak Native Corporation (Afognak) was established in 1977 through the merger of two village corporations that were organized under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA). Afognak is owned by and represents the Afognak Alutiiq people, who have inhabited their traditional lands of the Kodiak Island Archipelago for over 7,500 years. Many Afognak Alutiiq people were displaced by the 1964 Good Friday earthquake and tsunami and relocated to and formed the Native Village of Port Lions. Shareholder status is determined by ANCSA, and shares cannot be bought, sold, or traded.

Afognak is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors (the “Board”), all of whom are Alaska Native Shareholders of Afognak. Afognak’s stated purpose is that: “Shareholders will have a perpetual source of land use, shared financial and cultural wealth to the maximum extent possible. The Corporation will provide social, cultural, and economic benefits to Shareholders by building a sustainability, transparent, growing enterprise.” To do so, Afognak has established eight corporate values based off Afognak Alutiiq cultural values, which include: Harmony, Appreciation and Respect, Efficiency, Communication, Trust, Elder Knowledge, Heritage and Culture, and Commitment to Community. The Board created Alutiiq, LLC (Alutiiq) and various subsidiaries of Afognak and Alutiiq to develop core competencies in commercial and U.S. government industries and to ensure a successful future for its customers and Shareholders.

Afognak currently owns 248,000 acres of land in the Kodiak Archipelago, primarily on Afognak Island. These lands are the foundation of Afognak’s early financial success, and they demonstrate continued value through Shareholder use for culture, subsistence, economic development, and recreational activities.

The needs of the Native people of our region continue to be affected by systemic issues of distance, lack of marine and air transportation, high costs of living, limited access to broadband, diminished health infrastructure, and economic development challenges. In response, Afognak routinely invests significant resources in bolstering the social and economic supports for our Shareholders and affiliated Tribes.

Alutiiq Diversified Services, LLC was established on July 5, 2006, and transitioned from a Limited Liability Company (LLC) to a Corporation (Inc.) on June 8, 2021.

When established, ADS operated as a federal government contracting company.  In that role, ADS provided contracted services to the federal government including Construction, Logistics, Operations and Maintenance, Professional and Administrative Services, and Protective Services.

On January 1, 2022, Afognak Native Corporation reorganized resulting in moving ADS from Alutiiq, LLC to Afognak Commercial Group, LLC.  This shift allowed ADS to be more strategic in their role operating within the commercial business environment.  ADS’ primary business line is security however, we are capable of providing many other services both within and outside of our traditional security role.

In December 2024, Alutiiq Diversified Services, Inc. was re-branded as Afognak Diversified Services Inc. in order to align with its parent company, Afognak Commercial Group, LLC.
